Route

  1. 1

    Osakajo Castle

Osaka Castle or Osaka-jo was built by the military commander Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Although it is located in the middle of the city, the gates and stone walls remain well-preserved and the vast grounds have become a park. The Nishinomaru Garden is a famous cherry blossom spot. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery in every season. One of the features of Osaka Castle is that huge stones are used everywhere in the castle walls. As with many other castles in Japan, the inside of the main castle tower serves as a history museum. You can also enjoy a great view of Osaka from the top of the castle.

  2. 2

    Shinsekai

Shinsekai is a local area in Osaka near Tennoji known for its nostalgic flair. It began to be built in the early 20th century, being influenced by major Western cities. However, the product is quite unlike its European and American models. Today, it is mostly known as quirky and seedy area with good local food. It is particularly famous for kushikatsu or fried skewers. It is also home to Spa World, a large bathhouse. Shinsekai and its vicinity is considered less safe according to Japan's high standards, not least because of its red light district and drinking establishments.

  3. 3

    Tsutenkaku Tower

Tsutenkaku is a steel tower in the nostalgic Shinsekai area of Osaka, not far from Tennoji. Despite its height of 328ft (100m) being easily outranked by more recent buildings, it is still well-known as a symbol of Osaka's modern history. Its origins go back to the early 20th century, but it was refashioned into the current structure after World War Two. It was designed by the same architect as Tokyo Tower and shares the Paris Eiffel Tower as its inspiration.

  4. 4

    Yodoyabashi Bridge

Located next to Yodoyabashi Station, Yodoyabashi Bridge is surrounded by several architectural landmarks such as Osaka City Central Public Hall and the Bank of Japan. Thanks to its design and harmony with the surrounding cityscape, it was nominated as Osaka’s most attractive bridge. The 65-meter-long bridge gets its name from the influential Yodoya family, which was heavily involved in the foundation of several marketplaces like the Dojima Rice Market and Zagoba Fish Market. The original bridge was washed away in the Great Flood of 1885 and was not rebuilt until 1935 following a design competition. Now, countless cars and pedestrians cross Yodoyabashi Bridge every day, marking it as a functional and historical staple of the city.
