It is about 30 minutes by train from Kyoto Station to Uji City. As soon as you are in the Uji city, you can feel the atomospher of the Heian period still existing, and the Uji Green Tea. In this tour, we visit two World Heritage sites, Phoenix Hall of Byodo-in Temple and Ujigami Shrine. Ujigami Shrine is said to be the oldest shrine in Japan. The Phoenix Hall of Byodo-in built in the Heian period represents the “Paradise”. You can see valuable cultural assets and national treasures in the precincts. For lunch, you could enjoy a matcha lunch at "Tatsumiya" located along the Uji River. Please enjoy the 9-item lunch set with matcha powder in every dish making it a superb matcha lunch that you won't find anywhere else(option). After lunch, why not experience a tea room after strolling along the Uji River? On the way to the tea room, there are many sweets shops and tea shops based on Uji tea. Uji tea is one of the highest quality green teas in Japan. Please enjoy the temples and shrines designated as national treasures, Uji tea lunch, sweets, and the tea room!

Byodo-in Temple was founded by Fujiwara no Yorimichi in 1052. Byodo-in is highly regarded as a valuable temple that conveys the Pure Land philosophy of the Heian period, and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1994. . It also has many national treasures, and has a Japanese 10-yen coin design. From 2012 to 2014, it underwent major renovations during the Heisei era, and since 2016, it has been restored to its beautiful appearance.
Established about 960 years ago, the oldest shrine in Japan, located in Uji city, Kyoto, has long been popular as a place of healing villa for the Heian aristocrats. It has been reserved as the guardian shrine of Byodo-in Temple. Recent tree-ring dating revealed that the main hall was made of wood from around 1060, and the worship hall from around 1215. It is highly prestigious shrine that is also listed in the Engishiki Jinmyocho complied in the Heian period, and it boasts the oldest history of shrine as one of the constituent heritage of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto”. Ujigami shrine is an indispensable part of the history of Japan.
