Overview

This is the recommended tour if you have a full day to spend in Naoshima famous as an art island.
Your guide will help you navigate the area visiting 2 to 3 art museums and Honmura , a small port town on Naoshima's eastern coast where the Art House Project, a collection of abandoned houses, workshops, a temple and a shrine that have been converted into art installations and venues for contemporary art by artists and architects from Japan and abroad.

Meeting place

Your guide will meet you at the Shinkansen gate of the Okayama JR station. From there you will use public transportation to Naoshima island. It takes about 2 hours from Okayama station to the island.If you have a plan to use the Shinkansen bullet train, please get off at the Okayama JR station The guide will meet you at the ticket gate with a banner written your name on.

    Artworks desplayed in old Japanese houses

    Art House Project
    The art houses are scattered throughout Honmura area.
    Below is a list of three of the seven art houses
    Kadoya
    Kadoya is a 200 year, restored residence with a traditional storehouse which artworks are displayed inside.
    Minamidera
    Minamidera, built on the former site of a temple, has James Turrell's "Backside of the Moon" inside.
    Haisha
    Haisha is the former home and office of a local dentist. You can see many artworks including a replica of the Statue of Liberty inside.

    Art Museums

    The art site Naoshima.
    Chichu art museum
    The museum is located mostly underground for fear that affecting the beautiful natural scenery of the Seto Inland sea. You can see artworks by Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria.
    Benesse house museum
    This building was constructed based on the concept of coexistence among nature, architecture, and art. You can enjoy contemporary art displayed not only within the Museum galleries but also in all parts of the buildings and surrounding area.

The tour fee does not include transport expenses, admission fees and meals/drinks. The tour takes approximately 10 hours but the starting time of the tour and the itinerary can be customized.
