Overview

This is the recommended tour if you have half a day to spend in Aomori. A nationally-licensed English speaking tour guide will guide you to great sightseeing spots.
"Sannai Maruyama Archeological Site" is the JOMON village excavation site. It's a large and long term settlement from about 5,500 to 4,000 years ago. You can see reconstructed pit dwellings and pillar-supported buildings, and also a 1,000 year long cross-section of the soil.
After witnessing the Archeological site, we will enjoy fresh seafood from Aomori. "Nokke-Don" is the bowl of rice topped with various kinds of sliced row fish from the fish market. You can customize those toppings (some meats and vegetables are also available) while talking with store clerks there.
After you fill your stomachs, we will head to "Nebuta house Warasse", the museum of one of the biggest summer festivals in Japan. The latest prize-winning big lantern floats are displayed there. You can listen to the festival music live performance played on traditional Japanese instruments if the timing is right.

Route

  1. 1

    Sannai Maruyama Archeological Site

Jomon era dates back about 15,000 years and lasted more than 10,000 years. Aomori, together with Hokkaido, Akita and Iwate aim for the designation of 17 Jomon sites in northern Japan as a World Cultural Heritage. Among these, Sannai Maruyama is the largest site consisting of 2 areas, an outdoor excavation site and an indoor exhibition area. First, we go outside. You can see pit dwellings and pillar supported buildings restored at their original sites based on the precise research, and also a 1,000 year long cross-section of the soil. In the indoor exhibition area, you'll see lots of Jomon potteries, figurines, stone wares and so on. If you have time, why don't you experience making a Jomon pendant scraping and polishing a stone at the craft workshop?

  2. 2

    Aomori fish-vegetable market

You can enjoy Aomori specialty, Nokke-Don, a rice bowl dish of toppings on hot steamed rice. Stroll around the market (there are over 30 shops) and choose as many toppings as you like from a wide range of fresh seafood such as scallops and tuna only Aomori can provide. There are also traditionally prepared deli food and authentic local food. You are also allowed to negotiate with the store clerk to add extra toppings.

  3. 3

    Nebuta house Warasse

Nebuta house Warrase is the museum that introduces the history and charms of the Aomori Nebuta Festival. At the museum you can experience every aspect of the festival. 4 full-sized (5x9x7m) floats that participated in the festival in August are displayed. Staffs offer a "Haneto" experience, where you can try dancing to the festival music. And also you can try your hand at playing the taiko drums used in the festival. Footage of the exhibited Nebuta floats participating in the parade is projected onto a large screen. The shop sells Nebuta goods and souvenirs of Aomori.
