Ashikaga Orihime Jinja Shrine

Beautiful Scenery History Insta-worthy

Orihime Jinja Shrine in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a nationally designated Tangible Cultural Property. Ashikaga is an area in which weaving has thrived since long ago, and Orihime Jinja Shrine is enshrined to Amenomihoko-nomikoto and Amenoyachichihime-nomikoto, which are deities said to have presented textiles to Amaterasu-omikami (Shinto sun goddess and a main deity in Japanese mythology). There are two deities enshrined here, one male and one female, and from this as well as the image of where the vertical and horizontal threads cross over in woven cloth, the shrine is known as Enmusubi no Jinja, or "love knot shrine." In addition, many weaving instruments are made of iron, which is known the core of industry, leading them to be called the "gods of all industries."
There are two mountain roads leading to the shrine grounds. On the steeper of the two, Ichi no Torii, there are 229 steps, and it is said that anyone who climbs all of them will be granted a wish. The easier of the two roads houses torii gates in seven colors that represent the ties between people, health, wisdom, life, studies, career, and management.
When night falls, the inner sanctuary of the shrine is illuminated, and this along with the view of the town that can be seen from inside the grounds has been designated as a Night View Heritage of Japan.
