The Azuchi Castle Ruins were once part of a mountain castle built by feudal warlord Oda Nobunaga near the waters of Lake Biwa. The castle was known for its impressive size and advanced defenses which were made to intimidate any enemies. The castle was set to flame after the death of Nobunaga in 1582, only three years after it had been completed. Today, only the stone walls remain, but anyone interested in history will still find it worth a visit. Along the ruins, you will find Buddha statues, a pagoda, a shrine to Nobunaga, and a good view of both Lake Biwa and the countryside.
