Located in the center of Shiga prefecture, Biwako Lake is the biggest lake in Japan and takes up around ⅙th of the entire prefecture’s land. Said to have an incredible 4,000,000 year history, the rural landscape and leafy mountains that encompass the lake allow you to really enjoy the rich nature of the area. For example, there are over 1,000 different species of plants and animals that can be found in the area not to mention species endemic to the lake such as the biwa trout and a type of basket clam. In the winter, lots of waterfowl come to the lake as a place to rest, and in the summer the lake becomes a popular leisure/resort destination giving seasonal flavors to the lake for you to enjoy all year round.
