Furusatokan JRY

Art & Architecture History

Furusatokan JRY is a folk museum adjacent to the Kamiyubetsu Tulip Park in the Monbetsu-gun district of Hokkaido. On display at this museum are documents relating to the tondenhei, soldiers who led Hokkaido's security and reclamation during the Meiji period. Designated as a heritage site of Hokkaido, visitors can catch a glimpse of the work and lifestyle of the tondenhei through displays of the dwellings that the tondenhei of the time lived in and everyday items they used. There are also portraits of the tondenhei as well as documents relating to the lives of the tondenhei in the town of Yubetsu and their training as military personnel. From these documents, visitors can learn about the settling of the tondenhei in Yubestu and the hardships of reclamation. The documents are quite detailed, allowing readers to know not just the historical facts, but also feel a familiarity to the events. Additionally, in the Tondenhei Life Experience Building, visitors can learn more deeply about the tondenhei through hands-on experiences such as trying on tondenhei clothing, wood-splitting, fire-starting, and trying out cooking and other daily necessities from the Yubetsu reclamation period.
