Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum

Food & Drink

The Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum is located in the Fushimi district of Kyoto, known for being one of the major areas of sake production in Japan. The Gekkeikan brand was founded in the 1600s, but this particular building was established as a brewery in 1909, and transformed into a museum in 1982 to exhibit documents and materials related to the history of sake and the process of sake making in an easy to understand manner.
The Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum showcases important historical brewing techniques and tools constructed to make sake. During your tour, you will hear traditional chants that transport you back in time. At the end of the tour, you can feel history come to life as you are able to taste three different kinds of sake flavors in the lobby. Additional tours of a nearby brewery are available but need to be reserved in advance. Please note that the legal drinking age in Japan is 20.
