Once, Gifujo Castle was called Inabayamajo Castle. The castle became known as Gifujo in August of 1567 (some sources say 1564) when Oda Nobunaga captured the castle and freed the region from repression. At the same time, he changed the name of the district from "Inokuchi" to "Gifu" and designated the castle as his main headquarters. 
The castle that can be seen today was reconstructed by the Gifujo Castle Reconstruction Association in 1956. Inside the castle, there is an exhibition room full of historical records, and at the top of the building, there is an intimate observation platform. In 2011, the surrounding Mt. Kinka area was dubbed the "Gifujo Castle Ruins" and designated as a National Heritage Site. 
Within its fortified walls, the Gifujo Castle currently sits at a distinguished height of 329 meters. From the highest floor, there is a magnificent, unbroken view of the encompassing mountains and nature. There are seasonal extended viewing hours, so during specified times visitors can also enjoy the nighttime scenery. 
Our recommendation is to visit in autumn, specifically mid to late October through November. During this time, the beautiful red and yellow of the changing leaves encompassing the castle can easily be viewed from the ropeway.
