Gujo Hachimanjo Castle

Art & Architecture Culture Experience History

The Gujo Hachimanjo Castle, known as the castle in the sky, is the oldest wooden reconstruction castle in Japan. Like many locations in Japan, the Gujo Hachiman Castle scenery can be seen differently in each of Japan's seasons, but there is a far greater spectacle that can only be seen when all of the conditions are lined up. While shrouded in a fog, the castle appears to be floating, and at the moment when it is illuminated by the morning sun breaking through the fog or low cloud cover, it becomes a beautiful scene fit to called a "castle in the sky."
