Heian Jingu Shrine is a modern Shinto shrine in Kyoto, Japan. It was constructed in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto becoming the capital of ancient Japan. Heian is the ancient name for Kyoto and also describes a long period in ancient Japanese history, the Heian period (794-1185) when political power was concentrated in the city. The shrine is famous for its huge torii gate and is located in an attractive part of Kyoto. It is right next to multiple museums. The shrine also serves as the site of the Jidai Matsuri festival that celebrates Kyoto's long history.
