Himakajima Island, the closest island to Nagoya, is a fishing and tourist island small enough that you can walk at a leisurely pace and still make it all the way around in about two hours.  It may be small, but there are plenty of activities, gourmet foods, and interesting things to see.
Starting in spring and lasting through fall, there are nature programs where you can pet dolphins, catch octopuses, take cruises on fishing boats, and try your hand at making dried food or fishing nets.  There are also plenty of ventures ideal for those who like to stay active, such as cycling, power spot touring, fishing, and sea kayaking.
Seafood is a staple of Himakajima Island, and the fresh water that flows from the Yahagigawa River into the ocean mingles with the tides, creating an area famous for its abundance of seafood.  Octopuses in particular are a special product of the island, and an octopus monument greets those coming and going from the harbor.  There are a wide variety of dishes to try, including high grade seafood such as conger eel, sea urchin, abalone, spiny lobster, Japanese blue crab, and puffer fish, but also also B-grade foods such as fried octopus dumplings, fried shrimp, and shrimp rice crackers.
For visitors who are interested in the island's history, we recommend the Himakajima Museum.  A dainty white building that looks a bit like a church, the museum offers insights into the livelihood and history of the island's people.
Don't miss the opportunity to experience the unique atmosphere only found at Himakajima Island.
