Jindaiji Temple
Art & Architecture History
Jindaiji Temple in Chofu City, Tokyo, is a historical temple that was founded in year 733 of the Nara period. Including the main sanctuary, there are six temple halls in the vast grounds. At the Shakado Hall, visitors can see the Jindaiji Shaka Nyorai Buddha Statue, a national treasure that is said to be the oldest of its kind in Japan. The temple's surroundings are encompassed by abundant nature, making it a place where visitors can spend a quiet moment, relax, and forget the bustle of the city. We recommend taking a leisurely stroll around the grounds and stopping by one of the old-fashioned Japanese-style cafes that dot the area. Jindaiji Temple is famous for buckwheat soba noodles, so make sure to have a taste of those, too. In addition, travelers might want to consider timing their visit with one of the many events that are held throughout the year, such as the Bean-Throwing Ceremony of Setsubun; the Jindaiji Temple Daruma Market, which is counted as one of Japan's top three daruma markets; and the Hozuki Festival, which has become a staple of summer at the temple.
