Karatsujo Castle, located in Karatsu city, Saga prefecture, is unlike many other Japanese castles built on a plain and not a hill or mountain. However the castle does face Karatsu Bay and is therefore very close to the sea, almost like some kind of sea fort. The castle is also known as "Maizurujo" or "Dancing Crane Castle", due to it's resemblance to a crane spreading it's wings. The castle hosts exhibits of Samurai armor and weapons as well as other historical items and documents and the top floor of the castle provides a great view of Karatsu city. It is also a popular spot for cherry, azalea and wisteria blossom viewing.
