Minobusan Kuonji Temple in Yamanashi Prefecture is the main temple of the Nichiren-shu sect of Japanese Buddhism. It was founded by Nichiren in 1274 and became his grave site after his death in 1282. Nichiren is said to have spent nine years in the Mt. Minobu area reciting the Lotus Sutra which is the main scripture of the Nichiren tradition. If you are interested in Japanese Buddhism, the Mt. Minobu area is definitely worth exploring and there are opportunities to stay at some of the temples on the mountain if you want to have a deeper experience.
