Nihondaira is a hilly area in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, reaching an elevation of 307 meters at its highest point. Mt. Fuji stands towering at the front, just below is Miho no Matsubara (Pinery of Miho), and one can even gaze out at the far-off Minami Alps and Izu Hanto Peninsula. A prominent area of Japanese picturesque scenery, Nihondaira was chosen as number one of the Top 100 Sightseeing Areas of Japan, and it has also been designated as a Night View Heritage of Japan. In 2018, the Nihondaira Yume Terrace was opened, and from here visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from an outdoor observation platform.
There is also a ropeway extending out from the summit of Nihondaira, and using it visitors can get to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine in about five minutes. Tokugawa Ieyasu is enshrined here, and the main building that was erected during the early Edo period has been designated as a national treasure.
