Okochi Sanso Teien Garden is a large-scale Japanese-style strolling garden near Mt. Arashiyama in Kyoto Prefecture. It was built over the course of 30 years by actor Okochi Denjiro, who was known for his Japanese period dramas. The garden is famous for its lovely scenery, and within it are a large number of pine, cherry blossom, and maple trees as well as a view of Mt. Hieizan and the Kyoto cityscape. There is also an archive hall with photos and panels that provide explanations of Okochi Denjiro's activities as a period actor as well as displays through which visitors can learn about the history of Japanese film from the prewar through postwar periods.
The garden is well known for its cherry blossoms in spring and changing colors in autumn, and the dignified atmosphere of the bamboo thicket is an excellent place to spend some quiet time. An early-winter tradition in Kyoto, the Kyoto Arashiyama Hanatouro is held every year in December. Here, visitors can enjoy the magical atmosphere of illuminations or take a quiet nighttime walk away from the hustle and bustle of the town. There is also a free service of matcha and tea sweets for visitors to the garden.
Okochi Sanso Teien Garden has been registered as a National Cultural Site, and it’s a great way to spend an afternoon immersed in nature and learning about history.
