Saruhashi Bridge

Art & Architecture Beautiful Scenery

Saruhashi Bridge (literally "Monkey Bridge"), is a unique and unusually designed bridge located in the Kofo city area of Yamanashi prefecture. Considering that this bridge was built in the 8th century (yes, over 1300 years ago!), this beautiful but oddly designed bridge crosses the Katsura River as it flows between two beautifully wooded cliffs. The name Saruhashi comes from it's design looking like monkeys holding hands to make a bridge to cross the river, and not because there are wild monkeys, so fear not! If you visit Saruhashi Bridge and saw a Japanese lady in a kimono crossing the bridge you would think you've traveled back to ancient Japan! With beautiful foliage surrounding the area, this is a must-see spot!
