teamLab Planets is a must-visit museum in Tokyo especially if you are looking for insta-worthy spots.
You are sure to love their new concept named “Body Immersive”, where you can enjoy taking pictures and videos inside of the special full body experiences you get in each artwork.
The concept “Body Immersive” revolves around throwing yourself right in the middle of the art works, by blending together the border between you, the art work and others around you. The aim being to make border lines ambiguous to shake your perceptions of borders between yourself and the world.
Take your shoes and socks off once you’re inside and enjoy the venue barefoot. The venue is broken up into 7 different artworks with some of the sections requiring you to enjoy it while knee deep in water! : “Drawing on the Water Surface Created by the Dance of Koi and People - Infinity”, “The Infinite Crystal Universe”, “Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers”, “Expanding Three-Dimensional Existence in Transforming Space - Flattening 3 Colors and 9 Blurred Colors, Free Floating”, “Cold Life”, “Waterfall of Light Particles at the Top of an Incline” and “Soft Black Hole - Your Body Becomes a Space that Influences Another Body”
The Infinite Crystal Universe
In “The Infinite Crystal Universe” room you can get the strange feeling that you’ve just wandered into a space with never ending light. You can take great photos of course, but you can also use a special app to change the performance of the lights is another way to enjoy this room.
The changing of the light colors don’t just repeat a systematic cycle but instead change their colors and brightness through the number of people and their interactions with the lights. It’s recommended that you get the “teamLab Exhibition App” beforehand in order to take part in the artwork yourself!
You can get the app here : https://www.teamlab.art/app
Expanding Three-Dimensional Existence in Transforming Space - Flattening 3 Colors and 9 Blurred Colors, Free Floating
In the “Expanding Three-Dimensional Existence in Transforming Space - Flattening 3 Colors and 9 Blurred Colors, Free Floating” room, you find yourself surrounded by giant soft white balls that change colors as you knock in to them. Feel like a kid again and have fun pushing and bouncing off of the large soft balls which, depending on the colors they change to can make the room feel strange and flat. The balls are very large and spongy so be careful not to push or swing them around too hard and bump into the others around you please!
Drawing on the Water Surface Created by the Dance of Koi and People - Infinity
In the “Drawing on the Water Surface Created by the Dance of Koi and People - Infinity” piece, the more people in the room the more flowers blossom on the water surface and the colors and appearance changes. The point of this art piece is that you can move freely within it, so take it slow, walk fast and sometimes stand still to get the most out of what it has to offer. Every part of the piece comes with the message “You only exist because others exist. We mutually influence each other”.
There is a deep meaning to each of the 7 artworks, so please take home not just great pictures and videos but also that feeling of amazement too! But for those who really enjoy photography, it is suggested that you wear white clothes or brighter clothes as they interact with the light effects in the museum better!
Another attractive feature to the museum is that there are different devices scattered around that can be enjoyed through the sense of touch. Even the hallways in between rooms deserve careful attention with sudden changes to the texture of the floors being some of the features. You’ll miss things if you just walk around randomly, so be sure to check out and read the signs provided at each point and proceed after reading them first. (An English explanation is also provided)
Certain parts of the museum require you to enter knee deep water so having pants/trousers that you can roll up is desirable, but you can also borrow half pants/shorts at the entrance too. For those wearing skirts or widely flared pants/trousers, it is suggested that you change into the rental half pants/shorts or wear them under your skirt as your underwear may be visible to others in certain parts of the museum.
