The Tsuzuki Ishi in the forest of Tono is a stone embroiled in mystery and folklore. It is a large stone that is placed on top of two smaller stones. It is famous today for appearing in the Tono Monogatari collection of stories. It is not clear how this stone monument was created and for what purpose. One theory asserts that the stone marks an ancient grave. A popular myth has it that it was created by the famous 12th-century warrior monk Benkei. Why don't you visit and experience the mysterious atmosphere yourself? The forest path that leads to the stone begins at a torii gate and will take you about a 10-minute walk. The area can be accessed by car or bicycle from central Tono.
