Usuki Magaibutsu Stone Buddhas

Art & Architecture History

A stone Buddha is a great Buddha figure carved in a rock face. The Usuki Stone Buddhas (Usuki Magaibutsu) are said to have been created in the late Heian period (794-185) to the Kamakura period (1185-1333). They are also called Usuki Sekibutsu. They are designated a special historic site and, as sculptures, they are designated Kyushu’s first national treasure. There are more than 60 stone Buddhas in this area.
