Zuihoden Mausoleum

Art & Architecture History

The Zuihoden Mausoleum was erected in honor of Date Masamune and his heirs who ruled over the Sendai Domain in the Edo period (1600-1867). Today, the area is called Miyagi Prefecture. The Zuihoden Mausoleum is built in a beautiful historical style called Momoyama, but it was destroyed in World War Two and had to be rebuilt. In addition to the Zuihoden Mausoleum, there are two more mausoleums dedicated to Date Masamune's heirs, a family graveyard and a small museum to be found on the site.
