Daishoin Temple (Hiroshima)

Art & Architecture History

Daishoin Temple is a historical Buddhist temple located on Mt. Misen on Miyajima Island. It is said to be the oldest Buddhist temple on the island. Legend has it that it was founded in the 9th century by the famous priest Kukai, the founder of the esoteric Shingon sect. In addition to a traditional Buddhist hall, there is also a dimmed room filled with countless Buddhist statues illuminated by lanterns, creating a mystical atmosphere. Anyone climbing Mt. Misen should make sure to stop by this historic temple complex. Due to the colorful foliage around the temple, autumn is a great time to visit.
