For those looking to explore a piece of history, Toyokuni Jinja Shrine on Miyajima is sure to fulfill all of your expectations. It is famous for the Senjokaku, the hall of 1000 tatami mats. Dating back to 1587, this Buddhist hall was constructed to honor Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of the three unifiers of Japan. After 11 years of construction, construction of the building was halted with the passing of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Nestled inside Senjokaku, Toyokuni Shrine was constructed during Japan’s Meiji period, to redesignate the building as a Shinto shrine. Visitors traveling to the shrine will be able to see the rich history of the building evident on the unpainted walls, with the open wood pillars showing the centuries of wear. With a trip to Toyokuni Shrine, you will be able to trace the history of Japan and its religious development. Also check out the stunning five-storied pagoda (gojunoto) next to the Senjokaku.
