Hiroshima Toshugu Shrine, built in 1648 is dedicated to and enshrines the famous first generation Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. The Chinese-style gate, corridor, Temizuya (the place you wash your hands before entering the shrine), main shrine hall, offering hall, side gates, portable shrine and lion head are still intact today and are all designated important cultural property of Hiroshima city. The shrine even survived the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima and is one of the precious surviving historical buildings of the bombing. Behind the main shrine building, you can find the Kinko Inari Jinja Shrine which enshrines the god of prosperous business and a safe household among other things. The Kinko Inari Jinja within the Hiroshima Toshogu Shrine is also a popular place for visitors to pray.
