Kashiya Yokocho is a tourist spot in Kawagoe City full of penny candy and pickled vegetable shops. Many people visit wishing to experience the nostalgia of the atmosphere and downtown-style penny candy, such as hard candies and senbei rice crackers. Kashiya Yokocho has been manufacturing sweets since the start of the Meiji period. The area began manufacturing and supplying penny sweets instead of Tokyo, which had suffered a great deal of damage from the Great Kanto Earthquake. It is said that around 70 manufacturers started business in the buildings here in the early Showa period. Due to the nostalgic atmosphere and scent of the penny candy that drifts around Yokocho, in 2001 it was chosen by the Ministry of the Environment as one of the 100 Scented Landscapes of Japan.
