Kuramadera Temple

Culture Experience History

Kuramadera Temple is a Buddhist temple located in the mountainous Kurama region in the northern part of Kyoto. It lies sprawled across a mountainside, and it requires a hike up the mountain and many stairs to visit, though a cable car can be used for part of the way. Those who make the trek will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the forested mountains of Kurama and a serene atmosphere. Those who want to hike further can continue along a mountain trail that leads to the Kifune Jinja Shrine on the other side of the mountain.
Near the temple there is a hot spring called Kurama Onsen, which is operated by a local hotel but is also open to visitors not staying overnight for a fee. It’s an excellent place to refresh after a hike, but please take note that anyone with tattoos will not be allowed in the hot spring.
