Michinoeki Akita Port is a sightseeing terminal facility with Port Tower Selion, the symbol of Akita Port, at its center. It also includes Selion Rista, a covered greenery space; Selion Plaza, which has a multi-purpose auditorium; and an outdoor event space. In addition to the observation deck famous for its superb view, there are also a number of shops and restaurants in the facility.
Located on the first floor of Selion Tower is Selion Garden, a market offering fresh foods, processed goods, local sake brands from all over the prefecture, and more. In addition to marine products, seasonal fruits and vegetables from local manufacturers, and processed goods such as gakko (Japanese pickled vegetables), there are also a variety of souvenirs available for purchase, such as Akita specialty kiritanpo (mashed rice pressed on a skewer and toasted) and inaniwa udon noodles. At a height of 96 meters is Selion Kitchen, where visitors can enjoy a meal with a view. This casual dining restaurant offers a number of dishes made with seasonal vegetables as well as seafood barbecue and seafood kaisendon rice bowls.
The main attraction of the tower, however, is the 100-meter-high observation platform (free admission) which offers a 360-degree panoramic view. From the platform, visitors can enjoy a view of Akita City spreading out below, the sun setting over the Sea of Japan, a glittering nightscape after dark, and even as far as Mt. Chokai and the Oga Peninsula on clear days. After dark, Selion Tower is lit up in different colors depending on the season, and it is a popular destination for both families and couples.
