The Mogami River Basho Line Descent is a boat tour in Yamagata Prefecture that follows a historical route that was traveled by the famous poet Matsuo Basho (1644-1694). He mentions the Mogami River in one of his haiku poems. However, the river route has been traveled at least since the Heian period (794-1185) to transport goods, including rice and dyes. The boat trip down the river lasts for about one hour and passes through the scenic Mogamikyo Gorge which changes with the seasons. One of the highlights is the Shiraito no Taki waterfall, which is considered one of the 100 most stunning waterfalls in Japan. As you enjoy taking in the natural scenery around you, listen to the boat captain singing some traditional Japanese boat songs. In addition to the regular cruise that is offered around the year, there are special seasonal events and tours. The winter boats that feature kotatsu heating are particularly popular, also with international travelers, because they allow you to enjoy the snowy scenery without getting cold.
The boat tour can accommodate people with wheelchairs and offers English-language support.
