Mt. Takao is located just a short train ride from central Tokyo, and it is an excellent day-trip destination for travelers seeking some relaxing time in nature away from the hectic city life. Widely regarded as the best mountain in Tokyo, the mountain is popular among locals and visitors alike from spring through autumn. In autumn the scenery is particularly beautiful, when the foliage changes to brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow.
There are several hiking paths on the mountain, but for those who don’t want to make the trek, there is also a ropeway all the way to the top. The summit is equipped with a few restaurants and souvenir shops, and clear days will come with spectacular views of the Tokyo suburbs and far-off mountain ranges. After making your way back down, you can enjoy some local cuisine at the base of the mountain or relax in the onsen hot spring by the train station.
Please note that due to its convenient location, plentiful facilities, and beautiful scenery, the mountain can get extremely crowded on weekends and holidays.
