Ogijima Island is a small island located about one kilometer away from Megijima Island and about 40 minutes by ferry from Takamatsuko Port. It has become the site of the Setouchi Triennale art festival, and the large number of cats that reside on the island have led it to be known as the "island of cats." There is little level ground on the island, so most people travel on foot over the hilly roads. Houses lined up like fish scales, steep stone steps, and narrow streets that twist and turn and spread out like a labyrinth create a unique scenery that has a nostalgic feel to it. Murals and other artworks are also set up on the island, so it's a good place to practice photography skills while walking around the town. The town isn't just about scenery and artwork, though; while there, don't forget to try the island's specialty dishes, takomeshi (octopus rice) and fried octopus tempura.
