Osaka Castle was built by military commander Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the late 1500s. Although the castle played a major role in the unification of Japan, the gates and stone walls remain well-preserved even today. Located in central Osaka City, it remains one of Japan’s most famous landmarks and a popular tourist destination. The vast grounds of the castle have been reconfigured into a park that is open to the public, and it is an especially popular spot during the cherry blossom season, during which the grounds are full of food vendors for people doing hanami.
The main castle building is five stories on the outside and eight stories on the inside, and visitors can enjoy a spectacular view of Osaka City from the top. It also serves as a history museum, with information on the castle, the city, and important historical events. Also located inside the castle grounds is Osaka-jo Hall, a large, multi-purpose arena that is used to host music and sports events.
