Myths note that the first Shogun of Kamakura, Minamoto no Yoritomo, was visited in a dream by an Inari, (white fox) who instructed him to attack his enemies – thus leading to victory. Stemming from gratitude, the Sasuke Inari Shrine was erected in the 12thcentury to honor the ethereal messenger. The instant you place your foot on this shrine, it is evident that the gratefulness hasn’t been overlooked even after 800 years.
Dedicated to a god of success in life, harvest, business, and academic achievement, you can find ceramic foxes all around in a variety of shapes placed around the shrine, hoping prayers will be answered.
Taking place within a dense woodland canopy, you’ll be encircled by a dreamlike, and rather eerie atmosphere that is alluring to all who visit.
