Shikaribetsuko Lake is the only natural lake in the Daisetsuzan nature park and is located at the highest altitude of any of Hokkaido’s lakes, at 810 meters (2650 feet). The lake is surrounded by ancient trees that offer a glimpse of the history of Hokkaido’s nature. The lake’s symbol is Mt. Tenbo to the east. Rare, wild animals inhabit this area, including the tika which is said to have lived here since the ice age, alongside the white-tailed eagle and grey heron.
