Art & Architecture

Shiramizu Amida-do Temple is a sacred hall (and designated National Treasure) built by a royal lady named Tokumi back in 1160 during the Heian period (794-1185). Inside the hall thrones Amida Buddha together with two accompanying bodhisattvas (Japan National Important Cultural Property) and two guardian figures (Japan National Important Cultural Property). Shiramizu Amida-do temple is one of the few surviving Amida Halls of the Heian period, and it is the only one that has a Pure Land garden within its grounds.
