An interesting Japanese interpretation of Christian history can be found at the Tomb of Christ in the remote town of Shingo, Aomori prefecture. As purported by local legend and codified by a recently added plaque, Jesus Christ had not actually died in Jerusalem. Rather, his brother, Isukiri, took his place on the cross while Jesus made the long journey to Japan (where he had studied as a young man) before dying at the age of 106, or so the story goes. Two crosses stand outside of Christ's grave in Shingo, one where the bones of Jesus Christ are said to have been placed, another commemorating Isukiri's sacrifice. This story is by no means accepted as a standard narrative in Japan. Even the town that has approved the grave treats it as a religious curiosity, rather than as a historical monument. The grave does perhaps express the wish of some Japanese Christians that their country had played a larger role in the early history of their faith, rather than being located on the periphery of the Judeo-Christian world. There is a museum dedicated to the local legend which charges an admission fee and is closed on Wednesdays.
