Zenigata Sunae Sand Painting

Art & Architecture Beautiful Scenery

Zenigata Sunae is a giant sand picture at the Kotohiki Koen Park of Ariake Beach, Kagawa Prefecture. The art is 122 meters east-to-west, 90 kilometers north-to-south, and has a 345-meter circumference. It also has an inscription of old Japanese currency “kan’ei tsuho” from the Edo period. A legend says that those who see the art will have no problems with money and will live a long and healthy life. The sand picture is actually oval-shaped, but it looks nearly round when viewed from the summit observation deck in the park. Illuminated daily from sunset until 10:00 p.m., visitors can enjoy the mystical view of the giant sand coin lit up in green. Golden or blue illuminations are also shown during limited periods.

*Entry into the sand art is prohibited.
