Aizu Samurai Residence

Culture Experience Entertainment History

Aizu Bukeyashiki (Samurai Residence) is a resorted mansion where the family of the domain lord Saigo used to live during the Edo period (1600-1868). It is situated within what was then called the Aizu domain. If you visit the mansion, you would definitely be surprised by its lavishness. It not only displays an elegant architectural style that combines Japanese and Western styles - the mansion was also constructed using a combination of Zelkova, Cypress, and Cedar woods as well. In total, the residence is huge and includes 38 rooms. Within the residence, you can enjoy the Historical Document Museum, Rice Mills, along with so-called Jinya and Chaya buildings (both are designated as the Prefecture’s Important Cultural Properties.) Color drawing and trying out Japanese archery to win free gifts are some of the fun activities you can do.
