Warabi

Art & Architecture Culture Experience History

Warabi is a shop in Aizu Wakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, that sells folk crafts, in particular something called akabeko. The akabeko made by Arai Kogeisho Craft Center, which operates the store, were purchased by both the Emperor and Empress Showa, and they have also been used as the design for greeting card stamps. Due to this, they have become a well-known folk craft all over Japan.
Inside Warabi, visitors can participate in akabeko painting experiences. During these events, anyone and everyone can create a completely original akabeko by putting color and designs on the white "beko" model.
*Advance reservations are required for the akabeko painting experience.
