Awaodori Kaikan

Art & Architecture Culture Experience History

Awaodori dance is a traditional performance art of Tokushima Prefecture. While incorporating a number of changes over the course of its 400-year history, awaodori dance has become what it is today. Awaodori Kaikan was made to preserve and pass down the tradition of awaodori dance.
On the second floor of the building is the Awaodori Hall. Here, daytime performances by the Awaodori Kaikan exclusive dance group are held. Evening performances alternate, and every day there is a performance by one of 33 famous dance groups. During the performances there is a trial corner in which audience members can participate. The third floor of the building is the Awaodori Museum, a mini museum with information about the history and culture of awaodori dance. Costumes, props, and musical instruments from throughout the history of the dance are on display, so it's easy to learn about the transition of awadori. Miniature reproductions of what awaodori dance looked like in the past and 3D videos can be enjoyed at the Awaodori 3D Theater.
An additional point of interest is the Sanroku Station on the fifth floor, the start of the ropeway that connects Awaodori Kaikan and the summit of Mt. Bizan. From the summit, visitors can enjoy the magnificent panorama of Hirano Heiya Plain facing the Kii Channel. On top of all that, the Tokushima Prefecture Product Association has a shop on the first floor of Awaodori Kaikan called Arudeyo Tokushima at which various crafts, sweets, and other special products are sold.
