The Echizen Onojo Castle is a historic castle in Fukui Prefecture, in the Hokuriku region of Japan. Often described as the castle in the sky, it is located in Ono, a well-preserved historic town that was built around the castle when it was founded in the late 16th century. Located high in the mountains, it is often the only thing that is seen when the clouds are hanging low to the ground, making for stunning distant photography. The castle was dismantled during the reforms of the Meiji period (1868-1912) and reconstructed in 1968, but much of the original stonework remains.
