Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters

Culture Experience History

The Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters of Okinawa prefecture is a grim reminder of the many casualties suffered on all sides during the battle of Okinawa. A plain underground tunnel complex, it is notably sparse and grey. Built with the intention of withstanding bombing attacks and allowing for drawn out tunnel combat, it reflected the former Japanese military's philosophy of absolute loyalty and fighting to the end. There are several notable exhibits, such as the commanding officer's telegram to the Navy's Vice Admiral, commenting about the condition of Okinawa, or the pockmarked shrapnel scars in the walls left from soldiers who committed suicide as Japan fell. Not a place for the faint of heart, it yet remains an important part of history. It is recommended that any visitors to the Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters also make a trip to the Himeyuri Peace Museum and monument.
