The construction of Fukuoka Castle began in 1601 and lasted for seven years. When seen from the ocean, its shape is said to look like a crane flapping its wings, which led the castle to also be called Maizuru Castle; "maizuru" literally translates to "dancing crane." The castle grounds are also home to a plant called Cyperus ohwii, which is designated as a natural monument. The platform on which the keep tower is located is often used as an observation deck to look out at the cityscape, and in spring it's a popular spot to gaze out at the cherry blossoms.
In addition, an event called Digitized Fukuoka Castle Ruins put on by digital art group teamLab is held here, turning the castle into a wonderland of light. An installation piece that projects images onto the stone walls of the castle is particularly popular, captivating all who visit.
