Mitokusan Sanbutsuji Temple
Art & Architecture History Outdoor Activities
Mitokusan Sanbutsuji Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple hidden in the mountains of Tottori Prefecture, known as a site for spiritual training. It is most famous for its Nageiredo Hall, a wooden temple building tucked into the rock on the side of a cliff. The exact origins of this architectural treasure are not known, but there are legends that tell of the mysterious powers of a mountain ascetic monk.
Sanbutsuji Temple consists of several halls that are spread across Mt. Mitokusan, and any visitors wanting to explore all of the many historical and spiritual treasures should be prepared for a difficult hike. It is recommended that visitors travel in pairs or groups, and the staff at the entrance will check that each person’s shoes and attire are suitable for climbing. Due to the steep and rocky terrain, sneakers or sandals are not considered appropriate footwear, but traditional straw sandals called warazouri are allowed and are available for purchase. Anyone who undertakes the challenge of climbing the mountain will be rewarded with stunning views of ancient Buddhist structures and natural scenery, and those who want an even deeper experience can stay overnight at the temple and participate in spiritual training.
