Moyoro Shell Mound Museum

History

The Moyoro Shell Mound Museum in Abashiri City is dedicated to Okhotsk culture. The Moyoro people who lived in Abashiri about 1,300 years ago developed unique methods of navigation, marine mammal hunting, and fishing technology in order to live in harmony with the Sea of Okhotsk. The reason for the discovery of this culture was the Moyoro shell mounds, precious historical artifacts where the everyday tools and the bones of the people of that time were buried. The museum consists of not only shell mounds, but also displays of residences and gravesites of the Okhotsk culture. Free rental audio guide services are also available in Japanese, English, Russian, Chinese, and Korean, so visitors can hear more detailed information and learn about the history of the area regardless of language.
