Mt. Daisen is located inside Daisen-Oki National Park in Tottori Prefecture. Each year on the first Sunday of June, the Daisen Summer Mountain Opening Festival is held to mark the beginning of the summer climbing season. It is a popular place for forest bathing and nature observation, so many mountain climbing aficionados make a point to visit. While it is presently a popular destination for nature lovers, until the Meiji period the mountain was considered a sacred place of Mountain Buddhism, and entry to the mountain was forbidden. As such, much of the vast nature of the area has yet to be touched even today.
Mt. Daisen is equipped with a number of hiking trails, including easy courses that even beginner hikers can easily enjoy as well as ancient walking courses on which visitors can enjoy the surrounding Japanese beech trees. On clear days, the top of the mountain offers a striking panoramic view of the Sea of Japan, Yumigahama Peninsula, and Nakaumi Sea. In autumn, the serene forest begins to change color, and the mountain becomes a popular spot for viewing autumn foliage, and in winter the area is always teeming with skiers and snowboarders.
