Registered at the Ramsar Convention in 2012, Nakaikemishicchi is a small area of wetlands in a valley surrounded by three mountains. In the past, a variety and large and small waterways, paddy fields, and pools of water were laid out in Nakaikemishicchi to make rice planting easier, making it into a kind of mosaic with a diverse waterfront.
This wetland is home to many kinds of animals: in the rice fields there are pond snails and killifish, and in the streams of water flowing between footpaths and grassy areas you'll be able to see grasshoppers, frogs, and more. Coming in at only 25 hectares, it's a small piece of land, but over 3,000 different kinds of plants and animals have been confirmed to inhabit the area, including over 60 endangered species. Dragonflies are especially abundant: over 70 different varieties reside in the area, more than anywhere else in Japan. In order to make it easier for the general public to observe these animals, a nature observation event is held every month. You don't need to make a reservation to participate, so stop by and see it for yourself!
Note: Taking plants and/or animals out of the area and bringing foreign plants and/or animals (including pets) into the area is not allowed. Smoking and the use of lighters or matches within the grounds is prohibited. Please take your garbage with you when you leave.
