The Oiwasan Nissekiji Temple is a historic location founded in AD 725 when a monk carved a figure of Buddhist deity Fudo Myo-o into a huge rock on the Oiwa River. Since then, the temple has become a spiritual place for ascetic monks and worshipers. The temple features a large waterfall as well as figures carved into the volcanic tuff surrounding it. A winter training ritual is conducted under six waterfalls at this temple once a year on a day known as Daikan (the coldest day) on the lunar calendar. Participants are said to have their minds and bodies purified by washing away desires and passions. Anyone can enjoy this unique, spiritual event simply by renting a white robe for JPY 300. The are is also home to some outdoor hot springs that can be used to relax and warm up after the ritual.
