Shionomichi Trail (Salt road)

History Outdoor Activities

"A 120km road that runs from Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture to Nakanobu Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan. In the old days, it was used to transport salt from the coast to the inland areas. This is where the former warlord Uesugi Kenshin sent salt to his enemy Takeda Shingen, and where the proverb — “Send salt to the enemy”- comes from.
(It represents the mercy of Kenshin who sent valuable salt at the time to the enemy base.) From May to November, you can enjoy trekking along this long trail. As you walk around surrounded by nature,  you can enjoy the rural scenery, hot springs, and historical heritage.
※Because you may encounter bears, wild boars, bees, viper, etc., please be aware of the latest information and safety measures towards wildlife.
